"Painting the Effects of Light" En Plein Air
Oil Painting Workshop with Ken DeWaard / Sage Moon Gallery
September 2- 4, 2008

During this 3 day plein air workshop, the class will set up easels in and around the Charlottesville area. We will focus on understanding and simplifying shapes, along with balancing warm and cool colors, judging values, controlling edges, as well as overall composition and design. The approach will be alla prima, meaning painting from life and completed in one session. We will utilize 2-3 canvases per day (one for the morning and one for the afternoon). As our light is ever changing, we will concentrate on getting good starts by working with smaller size canvases and getting the overall essence of the scene. This style can be very invigorating and enables the artist to see results faster and keep their paintings fresh and full of color. DeWaard feels there is nothing more rewarding than painting under an open sky, surrounded by the scents and sounds of nature, along with the ever changing color and harmonies to excite one's creativity.

Tuition- 3 day workshop - $300 (16 student limit)
From Beginner to Advanced

  • Oil
  • Instructor Demonstrations each morning
  • Individual attention and critiques
  • Transportation and portable easel needed

Sage Moon Gallery presents James Sulkowski's "Light and Life"
June Featured Exhibit

Sage Moon Gallery welcomes new artist James Sulkowski with a featured exhibited, "Light and Life," opening June 6th from 5:30-8 p.m. and on display throughout the month. His dynamic still life arrangements come to life in the style and techniques of the Old Masters, including the use of hand ground and mixed paints. Dramatic, colorful, and vibrant: his works transcend the everyday objects depicted to enter a realm of timeless beauty.

Sulkowski studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and the Art Students League of New York. His dramatic effects of light and use of deep, rich color have attracted private, corporate and public collectors worldwide including former President and Mrs George Bush, the Saudi Arabian Royal Family, the Pittsburgh Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera of New York.

Sulkowski has won many awards in national exhibitions including the Helen DeCozen Award for best floral painting in the American Artists Professional League 64th Grand National. He has been featured in "Who's Who in American Art" and in "The Best of Flower Painting" published by North Light Books. Sulkowski has exhibited nationally for over 25 years and resides in Pennsylvania, where he teaches and paints.

"Meditation of Land and Sea" by Kathy Buist
May Featured Artist at Sage Moon Gallery

Buist explores the forms and contrasts of landscape in a way that is at the same time dramatic and deeply honest. "When I see a landscape, I'm always trying to look beyond the structures of what I see into something more inward, more elemental." Each of these visual dramas, ranging from seven feet long to just four by six inches, is a play of strong, urgent forms, dominated by a fresh and vigorous light. Of the range of scale in her work, Buist says, "Big and small images are challenging in very different ways. In the large works it's preserving spontaneity and coherence in what I'm communicating. With the small works it's capturing the energy without confining it, in a space that may be not much bigger than a paperback." Beyond mere landscapes, theses pieces transmit a deeper sense of the universe and convey a reverence for the earth. All her pieces transmit a strong and unique connection between the artist and the land.

Please join us for the Opening Reception on May 2, 2008 from 5:30 until 8 pm to meet the artist.

"Vibrant Visions" by G. Eric Slayton
April Featured Artist at Sage Moon Gallery

Slayton brings his bravura brushwork and colorful interpretations to each canvas whether his subject is a Santa Barbara beach or a simple still life. His images are filled with light and wonderful color harmonies. Being primarily a studio painter, Slayton feels it is important for an artist to use all his years of knowledge gained through academic study and painting from life to recapture a specific moment in time. "Painting should be about an emotion not just be a portrait of the subject matter."

Slayton's extensive art education has encompassed studies at the Escuela de los Artes, Universidad de Madrid, Spain, the UCLA Art Center, and Scottsdale Artists School in Arizona. His paintings have been displayed in the West Wing of the White House as well as through the Art in Embassies Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Slayton is an Artists Member of the California Art Club, Oil Painters of America and the American Society of Marine Artists and Charter Member of the Arizona Plein Air Painters.

Sage Moon Gallery presents Sarah Parks' "Contours - Figures in Light"
Featured Exhibit in January

Sarah Parks, newly represented in Charlottesville by Sage Moon llc, paints in the Classical Realist tradition with Impressionist elements. Refined brush strokes are softened by her natural palette. Superb attention to detail and surface texture, seen especially in her still life work, is evident in her figure painting as well. Graduated from Old Dominion University in Norfolk in both Art History and Studio Art, Parks brings a contemporary sensibility to classical compositions and subjects. Her figures are molded by the accurately captured interplay of light and shadow in "Contours - Figures in Light."

Please join us for the opening reception on January 4th from 5:30 until 8 and meet the artist!
